Be sure to lather up with sunscreen. More and more cases of skin cancer are being reported. In fact, according to new federal regulations that are effective December 1, manufacturers can no longer use the term “sunblock” on any sunscreen products. Why? Because there is no such thing. No product blocks the sun’s harmful rays completely. Additionally, the words “waterproof” and “sweatproof” are now taboo. Nothing is 100% waterproof or sweatproof.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Choose sunscreen with at least 15SPF (30 is best). SPF 50 and over do not provide much, if any, further protection.

2. Choose “broad spectrum.” This means it has to protect from both UVA and UVB rays.

3. Limit exposure. The most harmful rays are during peak outdoor times: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. If you’re out during that time, wear a hat, cover-up, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Remember that water intensifies the sun’s rays.

4. Don’t bake. Many people want to get a golden tan but that comes with a high price. The sun not only causes sunburns and cancer, but also causes premature skin wrinkling.

5. Apply sunscreen BEFORE going out into the sun. It needs time to absorb into the skin, at least fifteen minutes. And remember that pets can sunburn too, especially the bridge of their nose, tips of their ears, and other exposed areas.
