How to Self Publish Without Spending Any Money

Filed Under: Author News Tagged With: A WRITER'S JOURNEY, Writing

Stop-Talking-and-Start-Publishing-1MBHuh? Is it possible to publish a book if you don’t have any money? Absolutely!

Have you heard about crowdfunding? It’s when you raise the money you need during an online fundraiser. Here are a couple of good places to start:

*Kickstarter.com is a great resource for creative folks. They like to give money for writing books, making movies, and music projects. You simply set a goal and a deadline, such as I want to raise $1,000 in thirty days. If you get your desired amount in the designated time, you are given the money. If, however, you fall short of your target amount, you receive nothing. So even if you raised $550 in thirty days, you get $0. So it is important that you set a reasonable goal. Note that you are not allowed more than sixty days as a deadline option. Those that have pledged money to support your project will be charged (on their credit cards) IF you raise what you need in the allotted time. If not, they are not billed. Of course, Kickerstarter gets a small percentage, 5%, and there is also a payment processing fee IF you reach your goal.

*Indiegogo.com is another good option. Unlike Kickstarter you have more flexibility. They accept all campaigns whereas Kickstarter rejects roughly twenty percent. They also require campaigns to end within sixty days. But on the plus side, you are allowed to keep whatever funds you raise. On the negative side, their percentage is double what Kickstarter is if you meet your goal–or it will keep four percent if you fall short of your target. They too charge a payment processing fee.

A similar option is GoFundMe.com. I have seen everything on the site from “help us pay our hospital bills” to “help me take my dream vacation.”

Be sure you have a good grasp on what kind of budget you’ll need to publish your book. Be sure to factor in printing costs, distribution/shipping costs, and marketing. Click here to read more about publishing.
