PLOTTING, PACING & PROTAGONIST
This month is the halfway point of this challenge. Can you believe it? So you should be well on your way if you’ve done what you’re supposed to…Congratulations on your progress! Now is the time to get off the dime if you’ve gotten off task!
There are three keys to novel writing: Plot, Pacing & Protagonist. Within your plot, there should be three ‘C’s: Conflict/Crisis, Complications & Climax/Conclusion. Use dialog, foreshadowing, and backstory to control pacing, reveal character info, and thicken plot. These are the things that need fixing in your second draft or revisions. Your idea and main plot and characters and setting usually stay the same. It’s pacing and scene sequence (including backstory) and dialog that need the most work. Be sure your Prologue is necessary to your story. Refer back to AWJ #3: Write A Book in 2015 if you’re concerned about your protagonist as I have already discussed your book’s cast of characters, including your protagonist. I also want to remind you that a good resource is our podcast, A Writer’s Journey: From Blank Page To Published, which you can subscribe to on iTunes and listen anywhere, anytime:https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/writers-journey-from-blank/id911131840
