Charleston (SC) is repeatedly voted the best city in the south by the media and millions of tourists. Among the many reasons why is Spoleto Festival USA (also voted the South’s Best Festival). Here’s what you need to know:

WHAT: Spoleto Festival is one of the biggest and best festivals in the Southeast with 17 days filled with 500+ premiere events that include concerts, operas, dances, and theater

WHEN: May 25 – June 10

WHY: Spoleto Festival was founded in 1977 as a way to celebrate art, prose, literature, and music. No matter what your tastes, there is something for everyone–from Mozart to Ricky Skaggs.

WHERE: Venues are all over greater Charleston from the historic and haunted Dock Street Theatre to College of Charleston’s Cistern Yard.

HOW: Charleston Visitor Information

HOW MUCH: The price varies according to event. Tickets can be purchased online in advance or at the festival so long as the event is not sold out.

charlestonMORE: Also during this time, Charleston celebrates Piccolo Spoleto. While Spoleto Festival features national and international artists, Piccolo Spoleto focuses on artists from the Southeast specializing in visual arts exhibits, classical music, jazz, dance, theatre, poetry readings, children’s activities, choral music, ethnic cultural presentations, crafts and film. Also, Charleston has a zillion things to see and do, such as hoodoo tours, ghost walks, harbor cruises, horse-drawn carriage rides, and much more!

Fun Facts…

Pineapples are a symbol of hospitality in Charleston, a tradition that goes back to Colonial days when returning sea captains would spear a pineapple outside their home. This was to let the captain’s friends know he had returned safely, and that they could come over to hear his stories from the high seas.

The first full battle of the American Civil War occurred in the Charleston harbor on April 12, 1861 when shore batteries under the command of General Beauregard opened fire on the US Army-held Fort Sumter.

The Port of Charleston, owned and operated by the South Carolina Ports Authority, is one of top 10 container ports in the United States. In 2015, the port handled nearly $76 billion dollars of goods. Charleston’s Union Pier Cruise Ship Passenger Terminal has close to 100 scheduled round-trip cruise departures per year, in addition to 25 port calls by 15 different cruise lines.
