Charles Dickens

Attention All Literary Buffs! This year is the 200th birthday of Charles Dickens. To celebrate this momentous occasion, Southport is throwing the old man a spectacular bash. The promoters promise many lovely surprises during this first annual Charles Dickens Christmas Festival.

There will be a historic re-creation of a Dickens Village complete with jugglers, dancers, singers, storytellers, and merchants. Local shops and museums will be open late for shopping and exploring. There will be a Christmas Tree and Christmas Wreath contest. The evening will end with a candlelight ceremony and carols around the Christmas tree. Performances will be held around town, such as the Olde English Nativity Playlet at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Victorian games, displays of Victorian collectibles, and a one-man performance of “A Night Before Christmas Carol,” which will depict the life of literary great Charles Dickens.

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for ages 7 -12, and FREE to ages 6 and younger. Proceeds go to benefit several arts organizations throughout Brunswick County. The ticket includes all activities and entertainment throughout the two-day festival.

To purchase tickets or for more information, go to www.brunswickartscouncil.org or call 910-371-2641. The Charles Dickens Christmas Festival will be held in downtown Southport, NC on 11/30 & 12/1. Southport is a quaint town located on the Cape Fear Coast, roughly 30 miles from Wilmington.
