Does anyone know what tiny NC town becomes CHRISTMAS TOWN every December? Hint: It’s near Charlotte. The textile community of McAdenville began this tradition in 1956, which has grown into a nationally-recognized holiday attraction. From December 1 – 26, visitors can find Christmas Town in full swing, including nearly three dozen decorated Christmas trees around the town’s lake.
But that is just the beginning. Every home is ablaze with colored lights and Christmas decorations. Additionally, visitors will see thousands of town lights, 200 wreaths, and 375 trees! Interestingly, it is in the covenants that homes can only use red, white and green lights at Christmas time AND they must agree to “light up” nightly during December.
Helpful Tips:
If you’re planning to go see Christmas Town, here are a few things you should know…
Lights come on at 5:30pm nightly.
Expect large crowds on the weekend. Better to come during the week (Mon – Thur) if possible. If coming Fri – Sun, expect delays at I-85 southbound and US 29/74 westbound. Or you can arrive in town before 5:30pm and park and walk to avoid traffic.
Driving is not permitted in some areas, such as back streets. However, there are three parking lots and it is a great walking tour. You can find parking behind the McAdenville Baptist Church (and you can also enjoy music the church provides nightly), behind the Village Restaurant, and beside the lake in the center of town.
Buses are permitted but no vehicle is permitted on back streets.
The biggest displays are between McAdenville Elementary School and the lake.
