In addition to winning a one-year National Parks Pass, the winning entry also receives an autographed copy of my latest book, Spookiest Battlefields: Discover America’s Most Haunted Battlefields. Hot off the press! This year marks the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War, which was the biggest and bloodiest battle ever fought on American soil. Hundreds of thousands died during this four-year war. According to many witnesses, some of these spirits still linger at these former battlefields.

Our first national park was Yellowstone, which was established in 1872. Approximately 275 million people visit our national parks annually, which encompass 84 million acres in 392 areas. I hope that you’ll get a chance to visit one or two of these parks during your summer vacation. They are national treasures. To find a park or buy a park pass go to www.nps.gov/findapark

Here are five things you need to know before you go…

1. Get a National Parks Pass to save big $$$.

2. Make sure you pay attention to pet regulations. In most parks, pets must be leashed and never left unattended (outdoors or in a vehicle). Pets are not permitted indoors or on some trails or areas.

3. Bring the right gear. Don’t wear cotton clothing and make sure you have what you need or can rent it, such as a canoe or grill.

4. Make reservations if you’re planning to stay at a park lodge or campsite.

5. Stay up to date with weather alerts, especially if you’ll be hiking or camping.

Top 5 pet-friendly parks:

1. Acadia (Maine)

2. Shenandoah (Virginia)

3. Grand Canyon (Arizona)

4. Great Sand Dunes (Colorado)

5. Cuyahoga Valley (Ohio)

Top 5 Favorite Parks for People:

1. Denali (Alaska)

2. Yosemite (California)

3. Acadia (Maine)

4. Yellowstone (Wyoming)
