There’s been a lot of “royal fever” lately what with Prince Harry’s wedding and Duchess Kate and Prince William’s third baby being born. Media coverage has been over the top and nonstop. But what hasn’t gotten any media attention is the hauntings. All of the royal residences are haunted by royal ghosts. I thought it might be fun to share a bit about these lingering spirits…
Buckingham Palace is haunted by the spirit of a monk in a brown cowl. A monastery once stood where Buckingham Palaces is located. The monk, who supposedly died in his cell, frequents the rear terrace. Another lingering spirit is Major John Gwynne, who served as King Edward VII’s private secretary. The Major killed himself in the first floor office, but his spirit remains.
Balmoral Castle is haunted by John Brown, who was an advisor and aid to Queen Victoria. According to legend, they fell in love, but knew they could never be together. His ghost has been seen wearing a kilt and roaming the halls. Queen Elizabeth has admitted to feeling his presence in various places throughout the castle.
Palace of Holyroodhouse (also known as Holyrood Palace) is haunted by Lord Darnley (who died during an explosion), a woman named Agnes Simpson (who was tortured to death), and David Rizzio (who was murdered in the palace dining room).
Sandringham House is the Christmas home of the royal family and the site of many hauntings. Books have been seen flying off the shelves as if being thrown by an invisible force. More poltergeist activity includes Christmas cards seen ‘floating’ around the room. Blankets have been snatched off beds by an unseen presence. Inexplainable cold spots (sometimes described as cold bursts) have been reported by Prince Charles. Phantom footsteps are often heard, as well as a strange wheezing sound. Lights often come on and go out by themselves. Clock hands move randomly too.
But the most haunted royal residence of all if Windsor Castle (pictured here). Two dozen ghosts have been reported! The ghost of Elizabeth I has been seen by many royal family members, including Queen Elizabeth II and her sister, Margaret. She is usually seen in the library. Footsteps are often heard on the wood floors but no one is there when the sounds are investigated. The ghost of Mad King George III has been seen in a room under the library where he was kept (or rather hidden) for long periods of time due to mental issues. The spirit of Henry VIII still calls Windsor home. His angry figure is seen pacing and heard shouting incomprehensibly. Ghosts roam the grounds too. The ghost of Herne (King Richard III’s huntsman) is sometimes seen in the Great Park. Beware! According to legend, if you see his spirit, misforture will follow. Queen Victoria reportedly haunts Windsor too.
FYI: The nursery in Apartment 1A of Kensington Palace is well-known for its ghost sightings. But William and Kate aren’t worried because the hauntings are benign and only royal ghosts have been witnessed! The spirits of Princess Sophia, George II, and Caroline of Brunswick have been documented. Princess Margaret’s housekeeper swears she saw a woman in Regency dress suddenly appear in front of her in the nursery and then disappear almost as suddenly through a nursery wall.
