Did you know that 2015 was the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War? Here are five fascinating facts about this war:
- More lives were lost during the Civil War than during WWI, WWII, Vietnam, and Korean War combined. No wonder there are so many hauntings!
- Death came from more than battle wounds. It came in equal measure from disease: measles, chicken pox, mumps, diarrhea, cholera bronchitis, scurvy, venereal disease, extreme weather (heat stroke and exposure), and malaria. Roughly one million Union soldiers contracted malaria. Did you know that soldiers on both sides marched an average of 15-20 miles a day!
- There was no age limit on bravery. The youngest soldier was a 9-year-old boy from Mississippi and the oldest soldier was an 80-year-old man from Iowa. More than 10,000 men who served in the Union army were under eighteen years of age.
- The three states that saw the most fighting were Virginia (2,100 skirmishes), Tennessee (1,400 skirmishes), and Missouri (1,100 skirmishes).
- Between 250-500 women fought in the Civil War disguised as men!
