Summer Safety

Filed Under: Nautical News Tagged With: Beaches

Summer is super! You can do so much fun stuff during this time of year, but you need to be careful. When you’re out in the sun you need to protect your skin. I read some interesting stuff the other day and I thought it was worth sharing:

*Your sunscreen should be 30SPF. Higher SPF costs more money and offers no more protection, according to dermatologists. Any less than 30SPF is too little in the mid-day sun.

*It should be applied 15-20 minutes BEFORE you go out into the sun so put it on while you’re still in the condo or motel.

*You must reapply every TWO HOURS.

*Make sure you get those hard to reach (or think about) places, such as the back of your neck, ears, behind the knees, hairline, hands, and feet.

*You should wear sunscreen for all outdoor activities, not just on the beach.

*Pay attention to riptide signs. Rip tides or currents are powerful currents of water moving away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip tide, the biggest mistake is to fight it by swimming against it. Stay calm and swim parallel to the shore until you have escaped it. Make sure to swim in areas with lifeguards and/or “Safe Conditions” signs posted (green signs), as opposed to no lifeguards and “Swim Cautiously (yellow signs)” or “No Swimming Allowed” signs (red signs).

*Never swim alone. Remember the buddy system?
