Have you heard the news? Kiawah Island is the best, according to Coastal Living. Here is a list of their top ten beach communities:

1. Kiawah Island, SC

2. Naples, FL

3. Sausalito, CA

4. Lake Bluff, IL

5. Tiburon, CA

6. Laguna Beach, CA

7. Half Moon Bay, CA

8. Chatham, MASS

9. Jupiter, FL

10. Lahaina, Hawaii

    Quotes an...   Some fun facts about Kiawah Island:

*The island is just three miles wide and eleven miles long with ten miles of beach.

*People from forty-six states and twenty-one countries own property on Kiawah.

*When the island was sold to Kiawah Island Associates in 1988, it sold for $105 million. It remains one of the most expensive real estate deals in South Carolina history.

*According to legend, the old Vanderhorst Mansion is haunted by Arnoldus Vanderhorst.

*One of the best resorts in the United States, The Sanctuary at Kiawah, is on the island.

*There is lots of flora and fauna and wildlife on the island, including bobcats (rarely seen), loggerhead turtles (during nesting season), bald eagles, brown pelicans, egrets, alligators, yaupon trees, palmetto trees, wildflowers, and much more thanks to the sixty-five ponds and lagoons and maritime forest on the island.

But fear not North Carolinians, according to Dr. “Beach” Leatherman (director of FIU’s Lab for Coastal Research) the North Carolina coast should be on the list. His list includes:

1. Coronado Beach, CA

2. Kahanamoku Beach (Honolulu)

3. Main Beach (East Hampton, NY)

4. St. George Island State Park (Florida Panhandle)

5. Hamoa Beach (Maui)

6. Coast Guard Beach (Cape Cod, MASS)

7. Waimanalo Bay Beach Park (Oahu)

8. Cape Florida State Park (Miami, FL)

9. Beachwalker Park (Kiawah, SC)

10. Cape Hatteras (Outer Banks, NC)
