TSA Calls For Armed Police At Airport Checkpoints

Baggage Claim at San Diego Airport

The Transportation Security Administration asked for armed law enforcements officers to guard airport security checkpoints at busy times, following the fatal shooting of a TSA officer at Los Angeles International Airport last year.

In a 25-page report to Congress, the TSA made 14 recommendations to improve airport security, including having armed police officers at high-traffic locations, such as checkpoints and ticket counters at peak travel times.

According to TSA Administrator John Pistole in a report from The Los Angeles Times, the TSA report is a “measured response” to the Nov. 1 attack in Los Angeles. “The bottom line of all this is … that we are doing everything we can to provide for the best possible safety and security,” said Pistole.

TSA conducted a review of approximately 450 airports nationwide following the shooting of Officer Gerardo Hernandez, the TSA’s first agent killed in the line of duty. The review found most TSA agents are concerned for their safety and desire better security.

The report also calls for mandatory training for all TSA officers, who are unarmed, on how to respond to gunmen and the improvement of emergency communications in airports.
