Wilmywood, NC (a.k.a. Hollywood of the East)

Filed Under: Nautical News Tagged With: BOOKS, Carolina, Wilmington

Best-selling Author Stephen King wrote a science fiction novel,  Under the Dome. It is about people in a town in Maine who suddenly find themselves SEALED off from the rest of the world. Yes, I meant to say SEALED as they are trapped under an enormous, transparent dome or force field. Throughout the entire 1,072-page book the people in this town are trying to deal with the consequences of their situation. The book has been chosen to be adapted for television as a 13-episode mini-series directed by Steven Speilberg. “Under the Dome” will begin production in Wilmington, NC this month and will premiere on CBS on June 24.

Wilmington has been dubbed ‘Wilmywood’ by tourism officials trying to make sure that everyone knows that they have become the Hollywood of the East. It is hard to argue their growing importance in the television and film industry given all the production done in the area. The freshman drama, Revolution (NBC) is also being shot in the Wilmington area. Several movies, such as Nicholas Sparks’ Safe Haven and We’re the Miller’s starring Jennifer Anniston were filmed here in 2012.

According to their website, EUE Screen Gems Studios is the largest studio east of California. The facility and the 700 local crew can accommodate up to five productions at one time. Over 350 films, television series, and commercials have shot on the 50 acre lot.

The film office often posts information about projects at www.wilmingtonfilm.com/ and those looking to get parts in movies should check out www.nc.reel-scout.com/
